Anyone who suffers from acne knows how difficult it can be to live with this skin condition. Not only are you self-conscious of your appearance, but the little bumps on your face and neck can be painful. Luckily there are ways to control breakouts. Follow these 10 simple steps at home to help  maintain clearer skin:

  1. Wash your face morning and night. Avoid using face cloths or exfoliating gloves as they can harbor and spread bacteria. Use your hands to gently cleanse and dry with a tissue.
  2. Moisturize. Many acne products contain ingredients that will dry the skin, so moisturizing with an oil-free non-comedogenic moisturizer will add hydration and control your skin from overproducing oil.
  3. Be conscious of what you put in your hair – fragrances, gels, and pomades can block the skin’s pores. If you have oily hair, washing it more regularly and wearing it away from the face will prevent further breakouts.
  4. Change your pillowcases regularly to prevent the spread of bacteria.
  5. Avoid touching your face as this can help spread the bacteria and irritate the inflammation.
  6. Stay out of the sun. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can increase inflammation and redness and can cause dark discoloration. Keep in mind that some acne medications may also make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
  7. Feed your skin. Though most experts agree that chocolate does not contribute to acne, greasy, fried and spicy foods can aggravate the skin. Eat fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains for inner and outer health.
  8. Exercise daily. It is not only good for your body but also for your skin. Try wearing breathable fabrics on areas of breakouts and shower after a vigorous workout.
  9. Use makeup sparingly especially after a breakout. If you must wear makeup look for oil free, fragrance-free and free of added dyes, and wash your face at the end of the day.
  10. Relax and de-stress. Stress has been linked to increasing the severity of acne. Finding ways to unwind after a busy day or week will enhance your overall health and skin.
